Araw Ng Kagitingan : The Day Of Valor

Yes, Araw ng Kagitingan is also known as the Day of Valor, in the Philippines it occurs on April 9. Aside from it was named as The Day of Valor, it was also known as Bataan Day, or Bataan and Corregidor Day. The Day of Valor is a long weekend for us here in the Philippines; it commemorates the fall of Bataan, the heroism of Filipinos and American soldiers when Japanese occupied Philippines during World War II.

Picture not mine

Major General Edward P. King surrendered more than 76,000 American, Chinese and Filipinos soldiers at dawn on April 09, 1942. Japanese possessed forcefully the belonging of these starving, disease ridden soldiers. The soldiers were forced to march 140 kilometer to Camp O Donell in Tarlac. Many of them died during the march due to starvation, dehydration and disease before they could even finish it. Only some were able to survive, they could not even count the exact soldiers who died in the march because some prisoners managed also to escape from their guards.

Despite the defeat, the soldiers remained strong until  they eventually retook the Bataan Peninsula on February 08, 1945. The Day of Valor was a national observance but eventually they made it national public holiday to honor and pay tribute to those Filipinos who fought for freedom and democracy.

Not The Irresponsible Christian At All

Remember that I wrote about being so irresponsible by not taking the part of being a Christian, sacrifice my time to at least remember how GOD suffers a lot when he walked down to Calvary, sacrifice himself to save us from sins. I knew I had worked beforehand and have work afterwards, but I recalled how I was so committed with this task with my friends, my friends always doing this during Holy Week while I keep making an excuses not to do it I am busy and this time, I realized GOD just want us for a little time to remember, to recall what our Almighty did for us. And I am so thankful that my eldest daughter went with me, doing the Way of the Cross in Shrine.

Yes, it’s not the traditional one, like waking up in a wee hours to join the march but we can do our own march until the Station 14 and I was glad I did it.

It was so scorching hot, summer is now really kicked in, good thing I have my pair of slippers in our car that I was able to use. The way is kind a hard because it is all the way uphill, what we had was just a bottle of water. We were sweating so hard when while climbing up. But it was so fulfilling, I beat my being irresponsible and decided to do my role as a Christian.

You Will Soon Forget Them

I’d been too busy lately, I don’t even have time to get enough sleep. Good thing that the kids had their school break on October 26 so I don’t have to go to school to fetch them up after I went home from work. But a week is not enough for me to get things clear. I am always busy with work online and offline, running around to pay bills, buy grocery for the house and all that stuff.

Yesterday we went to the cemetery to pay my father a visit. When we were approaching the grave, my niece just blurted.

If you are dead even how close you are to the one who died, you eventually will forget them. We can only even visit them once a year.

What she said is true, we may eventually will forget them but I believe they are always in our hearts. Life has to go on no matter what, it will be hard at first but sooner or later you will get used to it that they no are no longer around. We just have to learn how to accept and let go because if you will not let go how will you survive?

There are people who would love to visit their love ones in the cemetery every month, some won’t at all. But us, we always make sure that we will gather on my father’s grave on November 2. It has been a tradition, but this time we went there at 8 in the morning because it would always rain in the afternoon. It has been days that its raining later in the afternoon.

It was a well spent rest day because I was able to visit my Dad on his grave and I get to share laughter with my kids, nieces, and sister. It was indeed worth it.

On Christmas Eve

I am just so lucky that I have a very understand kids, especially my eldest daughter. She knew that we are really having a hard time of money this year, recently she approached me and said that it is okay if they could receive any gifts this year on Christmas as long as we have foods in the table. It touches my heart and wished that everything will be alright then. If only we don’t have issues with money this time I could have given her highly rated music accessories that she always wanted. On the other hand, I will have to budget our funds especially when holiday season is fast approaching so we can have a bountiful Christmas this year, I mean at least there are foods in the table that we can share on Christmas eve.
